Raising the Bar in Managing Occupational Road Risk – NYK Wins Health & Safety Award

NYK Logistics (UK) Ltd won a major award for the Best Health and Safety Achievement in Transport & Logistics at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Awards Night held on 21st October.

NYK realised that managing occupational road risk and crafting culture forming behaviours were paramount to ensuring continuous improvement in safety performance. It set out to achieve improvement by means of a wide-ranging programme, which included: changing driver behaviour by raising awareness of everyday hazards, working closely with union and safety representatives, improving driver training and induction and reducing accidents.

The methods used included “safe driver” seminars, safety bulletins and toolbox talks, bespoke training and induction DVD’s and safety advisor forums.

These initiatives resulted in a 44% reduction in the number of accidents per million kilometers driven, 48% fewer collisions and a 64% drop in incidents while reversing.

NYK also managed to significantly reduce its insurance premiums as a result of these improvements.

The Judges commented: “This demonstrates an excellent approach, which has produced some impressive results and raises the bar in terms of managing occupational road risk.”

Organised by Safety & Health Practitioner (SHP) in partnership with IOSH, the awards acknowledge individuals or organisations that have made significant efforts to promote good health and safety practice.
